This rare habitat, comprised of a fresh water stream, coastal lagoon / wetland, and riparian woodland, provided respite from the long dry summers for a diverse array of species
including the island fox.
Visitors to this park can hike, climb, camp, and explore the park, which is home to many animal species
including the Island Fox.

More than 100 volunteers have served on nine committees to gather information on proposed improvements to district parks and their facilities,

islands, the National Park Service has made great efforts to preserve and protect these
island resources,
including enforcement of marine protected areas, stabilization of cultural sites, rehabilitation of historic buildings, removal of nonnative plants and animals, recovery of
island foxes, and reestablishment of bald eagles.
The
island also hosts over 100 bird and three land mammal species,
including the endemic
island fox.
While boating along the scenic East Hawaii Coastline

include 3 unique black sand beaches Kalapana (flowed over in 1989 now reforming), Kehena (formed by 1955 ocean lava flows), &

Because the Channel
Islands are almost entirely owned and controlled by either the Catalina
Island Conservancy, The Nature Conservancy, or the federal government, the
fox has a chance to receive the protection it needs,
including constant supervision by interested officials without the ongoing threat of human encroachment on its habitat.

While the land wildlife is slightly limited, there being only one large, naturally predatory, and native mammal, the small
island fox, marine life can
include anything from kelp forests to great white sharks.
In 1999, Channel
Islands National Park began an
island fox recovery program that
included captive breeding and reintroduction of
foxes, removal of resident golden eagles, re-establishment of bald eagles, and removal of non-native ungulates.
The
fox lives in all of the
island biomes
including temperate forest, temperate grassland and chaparral, with no
island supporting more than 1,000
foxes.
In order to mitigate golden eagle predation on
island foxes, The Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, with the support of the Park Service and The Nature Conservancy, trapped and relocated a total of 44 golden eagles,
including 10 eaglets born on the
islands to distant sites in northeastern California.
Current research focusing on terrestrial animals
includes several studies on the
island fox, one on the role of deer mice in affecting vegetation community recovery, and one on the response of lizards to the removal of rats on Anacapa.

The
island fox eats fruits, insects, birds, eggs, crabs, lizards, and small mammals,
including deer mice.
Home range use by
Island Foxes is influenced by various factors
including topographic features, available habitat types, habitat - specific resource abundance,
fox density, sex, and age (USFWS 2012).
On an
island shared by 3,200 humans, and visited by more than 1 million tourists a year, the leading causes of death for
foxes include pet dogs, feral cats and «road kill.»
The
foxes occur in all habitats on the
islands,
including valley and foothill grasslands, coastal sage scrub, sand dunes,
island chaparral, coastal oak and pine forests, and marshes.
The
island has about 230 species of birds and 25 species of mammals
including wallabies, possums, flying
foxes, echidnas and Eastern Australia's purest breed of dingo.
