planets around stars other than our own; and the DSCOVR satellite that soon will be beaming back images of the whole Earth in near real - time from a vantage point a million miles away.
Luckily, teams of Carnegie scientists
including co-authors Steve Shectman, Sharon Wang, Paul Butler, Jeff Crane, and Ian Thompson, have been monitoring GJ 9827 with their
Planet Finding Spectrograph (PFS), so they were able to constrain the masses of the three
planets with data in hand, rather than having to scramble to get many
new observations of GJ 9827.
In the past dozen years, however, numerous exoplanetary discoveries have been announced,
including a suite of 30
new planets unveiled in October by the European Southern Observatory's HARPS
planet - finding collaboration that boosted the full set of known exoplanets to more than 400.
A
new study shows that images of a meteor's streak through the atmosphere taken by Earth - gazing probes,
including weather satellites, can pin down the object's orbit, enabling scientists to check and see whether another
planet - threatening object is traveling in the same trajectory.
In the latest 161 - page document, dated March 9, EPA officials
include several
new studies highlighting how a warming
planet is likely to mean more intense U.S. heat waves and hurricanes, shifting migration patterns for plants and wildlife, and the possibility of up to a foot of global sea level rise in the next century.

In addition to the Kepler mission, the agency is planning to use future missions to further exoplanet research,
including the James Webb Space Telescope, the Wide - Field Infrared Survey Telescope, and the newly announced Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which is expected to study the nearest bright stars and potentially discover thousands of
new planets.
New results
include Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopic observations of the TRAPPIST - 1 earth - sized
planets (

Scientists are also studying
new ways to cool the
planet,
including increasing Earth's albedo, or its ability to reflect sunlight back into space.
Included in the findings are five
new rocky
planets ranging in size from ten to eighty percent larger than Earth.
The results
include new asteroseismic solutions for four host stars with confirmed
planets (Kepler - 4, Kepler - 14, Kepler - 23 and Kepler - 25) and increase the total number of Kepler host stars with asteroseismic solutions... ▽ More We have used asteroseismology to determine fundamental properties for 66 Kepler
planet - candidate host stars, with typical uncertainties of 3 % and 7 % in radius and mass, respectively.
On May 3, 2007, team of astronomers (
including Jean - Luc Margot; Stan Peale; Igor V. Holin; Raymond F. Jurgens; and Martin A. Slade) announced
new evidence that Mercury has a partially molten core using
new observations of fluctuations in Mercury's spin obtained with radar signals bounced off the
planet from Earth (with the 305 - meter Arecibo, the 34 - meter Goldstone, and the 100 - meter Robert C. Byrd Green Bank radio telescopes).
The results
include new asteroseismic solutions for four host stars with confirmed
planets (Kepler - 4, Kepler - 14, Kepler - 23 and Kepler - 25) and increase the total number of Kepler host stars with asteroseismic solutions to 77.
By studying these stars, and using additional telescope facilities such as the powerful Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, the study will provide
new and unique insight into the timescale for the formation of stars and
planets,
including whether
planets form during or after the assembly of the star.
When the issue was to be put to a vote, the IAU came up with a
new definition that
included the requirement of gravitational dominance, but also defined a
new class of object — «dwarf
planets» — which are spherical but don't dominate.
However, it appears the
new definition would also mean many dozens of other objects could now also be considered
planets,
including our very own Moon.
There are plenty of other factors at play,
including the composition and densities of the
planets, and determining those details was the focus of the
new study.
In addition, Ceres» light spectrum suggests that it may have ammonium - rich clay at the surface, which would fit the expected ammonia - rich composition of large, differentiated substellar objects in the outer Solar System,
including the «plutoids» defined on June 11, 2008 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as a
new class of bright «dwarf
planets beyond the orbit of Neptune (IAU press release).
