In his recent book, Life, Liberty, and the Defense of Dignity, he offers «four benefits» of mortality: interest and engagement, suggesting that adding, say, twenty years to the human life span would not proportionately increase the pleasures of life; seriousness and aspiration, proposing that the knowledge that our life is limited is what leads us to take life seriously and passionately; beauty and love, presenting the idea that it is precisely their perishability that makes, for instance, flowers beautiful to us, just as the coming and going of spring makes that season all the more meaningful; and, finally, virtue and moral excellence, by which he means the virtuous and noble deeds that mortality makes possible,
including the sacrifice of our own life for a worthy cause.
And yet, his performance as a young soldier driven to escape certain death by any means necessary (
including sacrificing some of his humanity) is rich and affecting.

But if the early church could survive — and in fact, thrive amidst persecution — when it
included both Jews and Gentiles, zealots and tax collectors, slaves and owners, men and women, those in support
of circumcision and those against it, those staunchly opposed to eating food that had been
sacrificed to idols and those who felt it necessary, then I think modern American Christianity can survive when it
includes democrats and republicans, biblical literalists and biblical non-literalists, Calvinists and Arminians... so long as we're not rooting for one another's demise.

As Luther saw, and as Gustav Aulen has recently argued in a study
of the eucharistic doctrine
of Luther, the fact that by a memorial action Christ becomes present in the sacramental rite means that his
sacrifice itself becomes present also, for we have to do with the «whole Christ» and the «whole Christ»
includes all that he experienced in the days
of his flesh.
While we all take some inspiration from ancient paganisms, there are some groups who are deeply dedicated to studying the primary texts and archaeological records
of their chosen cultural framework to try to make their paths as close to their spiritual ancestors as reasonably possible in the modern world — this
includes the use

The realization

of ancient cosmology, etc..
This should
include guaranteed child - support payments, tax breaks for custodial parents, and an expanded definition
of marital property to
include pensions, insurance, cost
of education and reimbursement for economic
sacrifices made by one or the other spouse during the marriage.
