In our view, the potential for
increasing access to legal aid through legal tech is limitless.

legal aid programs, which is likely as competition
increases and the social contract under which lawyers and society have operated Vis a Vis the state sponsored monopoly continues
to unwind.
While the
increase to legal aid funding is an important step, further steps must be taken
to address the issue of
access to justice in Ontario.

Jamie Maclaren, a Vancouver lawyer and executive director of the
Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia, says although he agrees with the LSS» recommendations, they don't go nearly far enough
to increase the incentive for private lawyers
to take on
legal aid cases.
In fact, as part of my job with Pro Bono Net, a nonprofit that works with
legal aid organizations, pro bono programs, and courts
to improve
access to justice through
increasing volunteerism, collaboration, and effective use of technology, I've had the opportunity
to work with Pro Bono Law Ontario and seen how adding technology
to their service delivery (both as support for their programs and as information for the general public) has allowed them
to be more effective and efficient in their work.

to support the claim that only
legal aid and / or pro bono will actually
increase access to justice, there is no evidence
to support that programs like the LLLT program will.
Our experience so far of lay appointments is of: (a) fiscal measures (
increasing fees and reducing
legal aid) which have a negative impact on
access to justice; and (b) unseemly spats with the Lord Chief Justice about law reform and the freedom of the press.
Although we often refer
to restructuring
legal services and
increasing funding for
legal aid as means for enhancing
access to justice, if we can not properly fund the existing system we put unnecessary pressures our justice system.
In his address, Mr. Moskowitz stressed the need for
increased funding
to protect the critical role civil
legal aid plays in ensuring
access to justice.
In addition, itnrecommends an immediate
increase legal aid funding, the establishment of videoconferencing facilities
to increase access to the courts in rural areas, and investment in mental health programs that provide alternatives
to the criminal justice system.
But as one respondent pointed out, whether governments

access to justice for the most deprived members of society, whilst savage cuts
to the criminal
legal aid budget can only
increase the risk of miscarriages of justice.

My point here is that rather than start ethics reform by randomly introducing less qualified, for - profit law practitioners into the market as specious proof that something is actually being done
to improve
access to justice, let's tackle the challenges that can and will move the needle; such as, modernization of the court system,
increasing legal aid, and modernizing lawyer ethics rules that will enable lawyers and law firms
to innovate and modernize the business and practice of law.
If the state

access to equal justice regardless of income level or ability
to pay.
The initiative, which Addario spearheaded as president of the Criminal Lawyers» Association, resulted in the government of Ontario

access to justice and delivery of
legal services in the province.
