The NYS Charter Schools Act of 1998 was created for the following purposes: • Improve student learning and achievement; •

learning experience as well as providing the
opportunity for them to demonstrate what they know — not simply what they memorized, forgot or never

learning opportunities for Salisbury
students, it has also provided a solution to a complex educational challenge: moving forward to create a progressive
learning environment
for all children while limiting budgetary impact.
For educators, the enticement is the
opportunity to
increase student engagement and enable
students to
learn from other
students, teachers from other teachers, and
students from teachers around the world.
Although classroom teachers who had such training have found it valuable in
increasing student learning, universities rarely fund these
opportunities on a par with the extensive clinical training required and supported
for other professions.
Technology should
increase the
opportunities for school and community to engage collaboratively in providing
learning opportunities for students.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that organizations that prioritize a performance - management system that supports employees» professional growth outperform organizations that do not.25 Similar to all professionals, teachers need feedback and
opportunities to develop and refine their practices.26 As their expertise
increases, excellent teachers want to take on additional responsibilities and assume leadership roles within their schools.27 Unfortunately, few educators currently receive these kinds of
opportunities for professional learning and growth.28 For example, well - developed, sustained professional learning communities, or PLCs, can serve as powerful levers to improve teaching practice and increase student achievement.29 When implemented poorly, however, PLCs result in little to no positive change in school performance

The coalition believes the Board took a positive step by approving an
increased level of ambition in new long - term goals and interim benchmarks, especially
for students who have traditionally had less
opportunity to excel — children of color, those whose families have less income, English language learners and
students who are challenged by

For instance, schools participating in the Carnegie Foundation's
Student Agency Improvement Community, a network of researchers and practitioners applying the science of
learning mindsets to daily classroom practice, have seen stronger outcomes among low - income black and Latino
students since implementing interventions focused on
learning mindsets.34 Equal
Opportunity Schools, a national nonprofit organization, has also partnered with school, county, and district leaders to
increase the number of black and Latino
students enrolled in advanced placement courses and has seen gains in both participation and passage rates as a result.35 In addition, several studies show that
learning mindsets interventions can reduce the effects of stereotype threat among female, black, and Latino
students in math and science classes.36
Connecting gestures with the mathematical concepts being

Being a good critical thinker and problem solver — STEM, Project Based
Learning, and Maker Spaces are bringing
increased opportunities for students to practice critical thinking and problem - solving skills.
With decreasing costs and
increasing functionality, usability, and access, the potential of technology in the social studies classroom to support transformative and innovative instructional approaches and more meaningful and appropriate
learning opportunities for students is greater than ever.
Teacher leadership is about
increasing pathways and
opportunities for teachers to exercise leadership, elevating teacher voice to inform and develop policy and practice and expanding existing efforts to steer systemic improvements to benefit
student learning.
The Hassels» op - ed, «N.C. must be bold on
increasing teacher pay,» calls
for «audacious, achievable goals»: Noting the
Opportunity Culture work being done in Charlotte - Mecklenburg Schools to improve teachers» jobs and pay them more, the Hassels call on North Carolina's leaders to transform the state by extending that work and focusing on needed priority and policy changes that would create a surge in
student learning, grow the state's economy, and
increase teachers» career earnings.
