Our town didn't have a cool little
Indie book store and the nearest one, other than the Waldenbooks chain, was forty or fifty minutes away.
One of our clients emailed us and asked whether Best
Indie Book Store would be the good deal for her eBook launch.
So, you know, just describe the difference between
an indie book store and a chain store for our listeners.

Okay, but the thing is, this
store won't carry any
books written by either my small /
indie press or self - published writer friends!
This won't work for other
stores but then those won't sell as many
books for the average
indie publisher.

Ideally, you're shopping in
indie bookstores throughout the year, not just one commemorative day, but it's fun to think of May 2nd — Independent Bookstore Day — as the Black Friday of
books and booksellers, the day when the traffic to their
stores can let them rest a little easier financially, at least for the rest of the month.
Things are simply easier to discover when shopping an Amazon, but a new app is hoping to make buying
books from
indie stores more appealing.
If you, the
indie author, go in there and convince them to try to order your
book and they can only get a 20 % discount, then chances are that
store doesn't order much from that distributor.
But for me, with my
indie - published
book, my novel or story is still just out there in thousands of
stores worldwide, in a growing market, still selling.
As an
indie author, I'm forced to create and sell two identical (same - ISBN) versions of each print
book: 1) A CreateSpace - printed version to sell online at Amazon (but no extended distribution) 2) A LightningSource - printed, Ingram - distributed version for Barnes & Noble retail
stores,
indie bookstores, and the like.
One of the keys is that you, as the publisher of your own
indie publisher, must decide if paper
books are worth it, if having your
books in
store catalogs and on bookstore shelves are worth it.

Although Ingram makes your
book available to them, there is no guarantee that
stores / libraries will order your
book, which is why we have several other blog posts with tips on how to sell your
book to bookstores and how
indie authors can get their

indie ebooks are listed on my Square
store, so you can go there to order those
books from me, with the added bonus of specifying what format of
book you want.
One
indie owner here in our town has a cart that wheels out onto the front area of the
store and it's full of ten - cent
books.
If you're talking about a custom order from an
indie store of some specialized title that might take longer; especially if the
indie store doesn't order in carton quantities... and by carton quantities... I'm not saying all one title but a mixture of
books to fill one carton... if that were the case the order would take longer to ship because of minimum orders.
And with
indie publishing
stores reporting in so many different ways, it takes some work to see how many
books in a certain time period a
book actually sold.
As an
indie author whose micro-publisher is in bed with Amazon, I can't get my
books into such
stores, which refuse on principle because the telltale barcode and «printed in» on the last verso page of my
books proves they were printed by Amazon's CreateSpace — despite an independent imprint with its own ISBNs.
If
indie authors now have the ability to get their
books listed at every ebook
store, why then are some authors so quick to surrender their worldwide distribution in favor of territorial distribution and retailer exclusivity?
For my
indie - published work, the very best way to make sure I get the most money is to just buy
books from me directly — either via my Paypal.Me link, or via my Square
store.
And without a doubt, the deal is really swell, considering that there are
indie authors already selling thousands of
books a month via the Kindle
store.

The
indie store, more than ever, is becoming the destination of choice to buy new
books.
Many of the authors would consider traditional publishing in the future for the reason that they want their
books in physical
book stores, a market that is still difficult for
indie authors to penetrate.
I am tickled that they are selling in the USA but I would have rather seen them take it to sell at independent
book stores then advertise to go to your
indie bookstore for one and help the little
stores compete or sell at Best Buy but Walmart is better than nothing

store, but when I went to download it in the Amazon Australia
store it was still at full price.
