We thought a great way to celebrate indie writing would be to ask those reviewers for their top
indie picks of the month.
As the year begins to wind down, allow me to introduce you to my favorite
indie picks of 2011, presented in no particular order.

of your stroller, the Bumbleride
Indie can definitely serve many uses as our
pick for the best all - terrain stroller.

picked out the Bumbleride
Indie stroller based on a friend's recommendation and love that it is made

THE FOOT FIST WAY, an
indie comedy made in just 19 days, was
picked up by Will Ferrell's production company, and it bears many
of the hallmarks found in Ferrell's recent spate
of films.

A sci - fi space jam that features some
of the most unusual applications for a guitar solo ever seen, The Artful Escape was

indie offerings go, this one's a hell
of a light show.
The film was met with much praise when it premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and was
picked up by Fox Searchlight, a studio known for
indie hits like Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, and,
of course, The Descendants.
Fans
of genre classics like DELIVERANCE, SOUTHERN COMFORT and THE HILLS HAVE EYES should be pleased to find the news that
indie survival - horror BLACK ROCK has been
picked up for distribution.
Fresh off their first Oscar win (Best Costume Design for «The Young Victoria»), fledgling distributor Apparition has
picked up a well - regarded Sundance
indie that could end up buttressing their 2010 awards campaign for Terrence Malick's «The Tree
of Life.»
But when it comes to
picking the «year's best film,» that which will always remain the most subjective
of honors, the
indie world and the venerated establishment no longer reside on opposite poles.
Bit
of a phenomenon, Night Watch did extremely good box office in its native Russia and was quickly
picked up for U.S. and international distribution by Fox Searchlight, Fox's «
indie» distributor.
The
indie auteur behind such lauded films as Dead Man and Broken Flowers wades into the rich mythos
of vampires to
pick and choose what appeals to him.
It mixes the sensibilities
of Metroid with an arcade brawler, and it's this week's
Indie Pick.

of problems with the kinda twee, kinda cliche -

picking up an aesthetically unpleasant black - and - white

picked up the film presumably for a Spring 2014 release: the season

Variety is reporting late Sunday night that FilmDistrict, the
indie distributor that put out Drive and Don't Be Afraid

of the night's more pleasant surprises came when Ana Lily Amirpour, director
of our Must See
Indie pick A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, won the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties played Cannes last year, the second
of the Elle Fanning / Nicole Kidman movies (along with The Beguiled), and it still hasn't got a North American release date, though
indie distributor A24 has
picked it up, so it's coming.
And what happened to the acclaimed
indie film «Beast
of the Southern Wild,» which has been
picking up nominations and trophies this awards season?

picked up Equals (Grade: B --RRB-, and while it does bring to mind one
of A24's most successful 2015 releases in that it's a relatively intimate science fiction story, it's probably not this year's Ex Machina.
Well, this year is seeing a nearly unprecedented number
of films being

indie and specialty studios in record numbers.

I think this kind
of positive energy is absolutely key for
indie authors today: you have got to believe that you can make it and persevere in your work with that belief until things begin to
pick up.
If that is someone's definition
of Indie then I have a bone to
pick.
You are right in that there are a lot
of bad
indie books out there, but I also think there are a lot
of bad trad books out there... some
of which are
indie publishers that got
picked up by trad publishers because readers loved the books.

Paul Pilkington, a lecturer in a university in the UK, signed up with the UK - based publisher Hodder & Stoughton after two
of his novels went on to sell more than 150,000 copies, other
indie authors who got

I've talked about this with some other black female writers — as
indie authors especially — with our suspicions that the majority
of romance readers (non-black) will not
pick up a book with a black woman on the cover, should we do it anyway and take the risk just to see ourselves on the cover?
