Rhythm games with plastic instruments are seemingly dead for good, but the genre has gone back to basics as
indie developers find new ways to pair pulsing music with button taps.
Starting in 2016 they found that there were no good
rhythm based
games in VR, so the creators Jan Ilavsky and Vladimír Hrinčár of the
indie game studio did what they had to do and started development.
Maybe it's me but I find it weird that the «musically shaped» feature is posited as a neglected thing in
games when in reality it is, if not a genre in itself, then a robust niche within «
rhythm gaming» (it remains a thing after
rhythm gaming has died a fad's death) and
indie / portable gaming in general.
At GDC this year, I had a chance to step into Beat Saber, an upcoming
rhythm game from Czech Republic - based
indie studio Hyperbolic Magnetism that tasks you with slicing flying cubes with lightsabers to electronic dance music.
