Though Genesis 12:1 - 3 does not contain the words «elect» or «chosen,» this passage is often cited as a defense of God's Unconditional Election of
some individuals for eternal life.
But John 5.28 - 29 suggests that in some way works are effecting the salvation of
the individual for eternal life and from eternal death.

There are many things that affect
eternal life for an
individual.
Just as Israel, as God's elect nation, was elected to serve God in a specific task, but this does not mean that every
individual Israelite was regenerate, so also, election elsewhere in Scripture has nothing to do with whether or not someone has
eternal life, but has everything to do with what role God wants them to serve in His plans and purposes
for the world.
«14 He adds,»... we must break once
for all with the idea of death as simple destruction of an
individual...
individuals are
eternal realities... «15 Using the illustration of a book he says, «Death is the last page of the last chapter of the book of one's
life... «16 And he comments,»... death, like «finis» at the end of a book, no more means the destruction of our earthly reality than the last chapter of a book means the destruction of the book.
History is not merely a platform on which
individuals are prepared
for inward blessings or
for eternal life.
Whether this future is conceived as
eternal life for the
individual, or a new heaven and a new earth
for mankind, or as the conquest of evil in or beyond human history, the trajectory is toward the future, the eschaton.
God chooses certain
individuals for a task, not
for eternal life.
It appears also as a nationalism in which man is taught to
live and die
for his own race or country as the ultimate worthful reality, and which requires the promotion of national power and glory at the expense of other nations as well as of the
individuals with their own direct relation to the
eternal.
But never to
eternal life or
eternal death; He chooses groups or
individuals for certain tasks.
To be sure, in his
eternal wisdom, God elected those whom he chose
for eternal life and banned the remainder to perdition, but the way he chose to make known his election was through his Word and Spirit, which created a relationship of covenant between himself and each of his elect; thus, the relation between God and the
individual was grounded on covenant.
