In compiling the SPOTme ® survey data, researchers found that infrequent sunscreen use, high numbers of blistering childhood sunburns and chronic
indoor tanning bed use were all associated with a recently changing mole.
In addition, a study published in the International Journal of Cancer in May 2011 determined that for young people diagnosed with melanoma between the ages of 18 and 29 years old, 76 percent were attributable to
indoor tanning bed use.

indoor tanning device
used (sunlamps,
tanning beds, or booths), and skin sensitivity to the sun and proportion of time spent outdoors in childhood.
According to Dr. Brod, studies show the rate for melanoma is 59 percent higher for those who have ever
used tanning beds and is double for those who
indoor tan more than 10 times in a lifetime.

Cartmel's team surveyed nearly 500 people who had previously sunbathed or
used an
indoor tanning bed.
But the organization emphasized some shortcomings in the research, such as the inability of most studies to tease apart the effects of
indoor tanning versus sunbathing or to pinpoint how the extent of
tanning -
bed use — also known as the «dose» — affects skin - cancer risk.
This is the most restrictive law on the
use of
indoor tanning beds in the United States (other states have some restrictions on the
use, but no outright ban).
