To commemorate the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy — and the resiliency of New York City's arts community, which was hit especially hard by the storm — the Dedalus Foundation, the Brooklyn Rail, the Jamestown Charitable Foundation join
with Industry City Associates to present a nearly 100,000 square - foot exhibition entitled Come Together: Surviving Sandy, Year 1.
Open Studio day at
Industry City on April 26 was a «first annual» — that is, a pioneering experiment — meant to foster community both within and outside the circle of creative tenants at the vast Bush Terminal industrial and warehousing facility in Sunset Park.
«One of the most defining characteristics [of
Industry City],» said Kimball, «Is where else do you find 6 million sq. ft. that will grow to close to 7 million, and already has an eclectic mix of companies?»
Following an initial $ 250m regeneration led by Jamestown, Belvedere Capital and Angelo Gordon & Co, Bush Terminal has been reborn
as Industry City: 6m square feet of hip retail concessions, workshops and office space sprawled across 16 warehouses.
I may just be cynical, but the two trees thing sounds like a repeat of what the «surviving sandy» show was
for industry city in terms of disingenuous PR... they've been pretty aggressively courting startups in some of their dumbo properties at the expense of artists that have had studios there for 5, 10, 15 years only to see sudden rent hikes.

Indeed, the artist Iliana Emilia Garcia and her husband are now looking for spaces «
past Industry City, in the 50s, in Sunset Park, that are still affordable somehow,» in her words.
Last year,
Industry City became a flashpoint among the arts community immediately after it raised rents, forcing at least fifty artists to leave.
Located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn,
Industry City seems to be an artist's utopia with perfectly sunlit studios, delicious food options, and an environment swelling with creativity.

fishing industry the city remains a busy port.
And, of course, light industrial spaces in places
like Industry City and Pier 70, in San Francisco, are attaching retail space and creating popular shopping destinations, thus, creating a niche for innovative developers who recognize how these mixed - use spaces can activate neighborhoods.
