For the noble few who have dared stick with me through this post which is quite clearly not much more than free therapy for me - this is my chief concern about Babywise: It's not the idea of scheduling (although I can not get on board with cry - it - out
infant sleep training as part of that schedule), it's not the way orderliness and predictability are lauded and practically guaranteed, and it's not the sketchy breastfeeding advice / information.
There is one aspect of the Babywise method that I simply and utterly can not - will not - stand in agreement with, nor am I able to close this series without speaking to it: cry - it - out
infant sleep training.
In all honesty, I could a series on cry - it - out
infant sleep training itself, but I think I'll stop here.
Our society is in the throes of an ever increasing and worrying epidemic, that of
infant sleep training.

infant sleep training recently made national news, misinforming pediatricians and parents who look to authorities for guidance.

From the earliest weeks of life, when an
infant is taught to control hunger in order to meet the
sleeping needs of parents and to fit into a social pattern in which people do not eat during the night; through babyhood, where etiquette skills include learning conventional greetings such as morning kisses and waving bye - bye; to toddler
training in such concepts as sharing toys with a guest, refraining from hitting, and expressing gratitude for presents, manners are used to establish a basis for other virtues.
Can you PROVE that the long - term harm from a few nights of CIO is GREATER than the long - term harm caused by
sleep disorders or excessive crying in an
infant who (for whatever reason)
sleep training would have worked after just a night or two (or even one longer bout of crying for less than 30 minutes on one day, which some parents claim worked for them)?
The only studies you can cite in response are basically ones done on
infants who have been significantly neglected or have excessive crying bouts not caused by
sleep training.
This advice improves support of the physiologically vulnerable
infant by a responsive parent, and ideally will help parents avoid controversial practices of
sleep training, «cry it out» methods, or solitary
infant sleep.
Also, I don't know anyone who would suggest
sleep training and
infant before the age of 6 months.
Peds get even less
training in
infant / child
sleep than they do in nutrition (& that gets 1 course, if they're lucky).

Most moms and dads would agree that a child who
sleeps through the night, can assist in dressing and feeding themselves and who may soon start toddler
training is a relief compared to the total care a newborn or
infant needs.
Please do not try
sleep training with very young
infants.
