Case studies
of exceptional schools indicate that school leaders
influence learning primarily by galvanizing effort around ambitious goals and by establishing conditions that
support teachers and that help students succeed (Togneri and Anderson, 2003).
Greater emphasis and attention — by the board, by schools and school districts, and by reformers — to structuring, encouraging, and
supporting the leadership roles that NBCTs can and should play could maximize the
influence of these
teachers as coaches, mentors, and leaders for other
teachers.

This «academic care» is
influenced by: personal qualities
of teachers and their relationships with students; the curriculum and its ability to promote meaningful participation and positive learning experiences; the school's organisational structure and its ability to offer safety,
support, trust, guidance and challenge; and links with the broader community.
Acknowledging this
influence and the lack
of strong evidence
supporting links between
teacher effectiveness and traditional metrics that have driven
teacher retention and compensation policies for decades, recent policy conversations have focused on new ways
of measuring and rewarding effectiveness.
Across these studies there was strong
support for the validity

Melody (first author) developed the new literacies course to accomplish three main objectives: (a) to provide

Another 300
teachers joined the TLI in 2014.55 All participating

In recounting the history

teacher dissatisfaction, Ingersoll (2001b) found that poor administrative
support (60.1 percent) and lack
