High rates of use and early
initiation of alcohol use have been linked to externalizing symptoms (e.g., Dodge et al. 2009; King et al. 2004), and this early starter pattern likely provides enough variability in early adolescence for internalizing problems to serve a protective function for youth elevated on externalizing symptoms.
This is consistent with internalizing symptoms delaying
initiation of alcohol use as suggested by findings of Sung et al. (2004).
Globally, harmful alcohol use is a major modifiable contributor to the burden of disease.1 The typical age of
initiation of alcohol use is around mid-adolescence and for a significant minority of adolescents their alcohol use will result in substantial harms, the most costly of which is alcohol use disorder (AUD).2 Defined as a cluster of symptoms indicating continued alcohol use despite significant problems, AUD is common and imposes a significant burden on the individual, their family and the wider society.

«Adolescence is a critical risk period for
initiation of alcohol use, and earlier onset of drinking is associated with greater risk of developing alcohol abuse and dependence,» said Dr. Gale Burstein, Erie County Commissioner of Health.

Earlier
initiation of romantic relationships and more frequent
alcohol use were predicted by greater sociability and less impulsivity in childhood, higher quality friendships and greater peer acceptance in early adolescence, and a more mature appearance and physical attractiveness (among females) at age 13.
These associations were mediated, however, by earlier
initiation of romantic relationships and more frequent
use of alcohol in middle adolescence.
Parental factors such as parental monitoring and parental involvement are associated with delayed
