Karl Buchberg, MoMA's senior conservator, who has organized the New York leg of the
exhibition with Jodi Hauptman, MoMA's senior curator of drawings and prints, said that when he started working on «The Swimming Pool» in 2008 he had three goals: «The first was to replace the burlap; the second to
install it at its proper height, as it was in Matisse's dining room, at a height above five feet; and the third to
install it as a room, to reflect the
original architecture rather than as a passageway, as it had been shown before.»
Brought together (many for the first time since Boetti's seminal
exhibition at Galleria Christian Stein in Turin in 1967) and
installed in a dense configuration inspired by the
original clustered presentation, these early works convey the material experiments of the period as well as notions of measurement and chance that Boetti would play with and revise throughout his career.
The
exhibition is centered on Peña Salinas's visits to Mexico, where she was born and raised, in search of the
original site of the ancient Tlaloc monolith in Coatlinchan, México, which is presently
installed in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City.
