many years ago I planned out what it would take to
install a grid tie solar system big enough to have net zero energy use from the
central utility company on my big house (3380 sq ft
heated / cooled + all electrical).
We found that
installing a new
heat pump at the time the existing
central air conditioner needs replacement will generally be cost - effective, with the median simple payback period (time for the energy savings to fully pay back the additional cost) being 4.7 years.
But for homes without
central air conditioners, the cost to
install a
heat pump is higher, and the median simple payback was nearly 15 years, although just over 10 % of homes have simple payback periods of five years or less.
There are a couple of reasons; the main one is that when
central heating was developed it was much easier to
install little pipes than big ducts in retrofits.
When I started work as a trainee engineer in the mid-1960's two - pipe pumped
central heating systems were just starting to be
