Earlier studies tend to use either
the instantaneous radiative imbalance at the tropopause (Fi), or very similarly, the radiative imbalance at the Top - of - the - Atmosphere (TOA) after stratospheric adjustments — the adjusted forcing (Fa).
In this case the CO2 concentration is instantaneously quadrupled and kept constant for 150 years of simulation, and both equilibrium climate sensitivity and RF are diagnosed from a linear fit of perturbations in global mean surface temperature to
the instantaneous radiative imbalance at the TOA.

The OHC integrates the
radiative imbalance making it a much less noisy quantity than
instantaneous fluxes you keep wanting to show.
It was the
instantaneous change in
radiative imbalance at the tropopause, because stratospheric adjustments were expected to negate any change in OLR caused by increasing GHGs above the tropopause.
