Here are my substitutions: 1) nutmeg
instead of allspice 2) cranberry juice instead of OJ 3) spiced rum instead of whiskey / rye 4) strong tea blend with added apples / orange / ginger (called xmas blend at my local tea shop) instead of just strong coffee / tea 5) double the vanilla (I always double the vanilla) Ps this is my very first comment on any cooking / baking blog:)
Nutmeg

I will try it with apple juice, not whiskey, & use nutmeg
instead of allspice... & i might get a little bold & throw in some cranberries (since i HATE raisins)
I used slightly different spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, ginger, mace)
instead of the allspice used here; also, didn't use pastry strips to make the crosses since I always think that a nice fondant frosting (just powdered sugar and cream) is a real treat with the buns.
I too slightly changed the recipe by using cardamon
instead of allspice.
I used sunflower seeds (raw and unsalted) instead of walnuts and I added powdered ginger
instead of allspice.
Also,
instead of allspice (which was mysteriously missing from my spice rack), I used a blend of cardamom, coriander, and cinnamon — divine.
Not exact matches
I tweaked it by adding an extra cup
of veggie broth and used pumpkin pie spice
instead of the cinnamon /
allspice, but definitely a keeper recipe!
Swap out the
allspice and cinnamon (they can come off as too dessert - like when combined with sweet potatoes) and use cumin and coriander
instead, maybe a dash
of paprika if you've got it.
I used ground
allspice instead of clove, but I think either would still give the flavor you want.

I added 1/2 cup cheese (1 / 4c Parmesan, 1 / 4c provolone), and

If you're not a fan
of allspice, try ground cloves or cinnamon
instead.
Instead I used about a tablespoon
of fresh, minced ginger and a 1/4 teaspoon
allspice, and a dash
of cayenne pepper.
I made mine with
allspice instead of cloves (because we were out) and it turned out great!!

allspice, you can substitute a pinch
of cinnamon and a pinch
of cloves
instead.
