The point I am trying to make is that blanket statements like, «no
more than five minutes in length» sound good, but often lead to
instructional designers being put into binds by managers who hear this kind of advice,
and then insist that all
videos be less than five minutes.
We do not conclude that the guided
video viewing activity is better than the
video coding activity, only that it appears to be
more appropriate for the particular target learners,
instructional context,
and learning outcomes defined in this project.
Using a
video analysis support tool, mathematics
and science teachers became
more attuned to classroom events, paying greater attention to what was occurring
and how they interpreted such
instructional interactions.
It also applies to much
more than just online course copy,
and can include
video and audio scripts or
instructional text.
They found that
video could help children learn by representing words in
more than one media format, clarifying the
instructional dialogue
and adding
more information to make sense of words that they are learning.
