Because they experience a
growth spurt during this period, they should aim to get about 200 milligrams more calcium, or «between 1,000 and 1,100» milligrams, said Dr. Steven A. Abrams, a professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine who specializes in the calcium
intake of children and was one of the panelists who wrote the IOM report.
In exclusively breastfed babies, milk
intake increases quickly
during the first few weeks of life, then stays about the same between one and six months (though it likely increases short term
during growth spurts).
