With investigations of the conformational properties and
interaction stoichiometry of polyribonucleotides of simple and complex sequence (7) and the separation of the complementary strands of DNA and then their renaturation to biologically active duplexes (8), the groundwork was laid for the complementary strand annealing that proved so critical in making gene cloning possible.
