Thankfully, the developers added some variety in the overworld maps and if the dungeons were more
interesting and
sidequests played a larger role then I could see this being a contender for one of the best modern RPGs.
Still the open world can feel barren thanks to its lack of content and while there will be
sidequests to undertake, majority of the time is usually spend running from one location to the next with nothing
interesting in between to make the journey easier.
Numerous
sidequests were dotted along the area, which Double Fine said would be optional and not a grind - requirement but would provide some
interesting color to the story and world and provide extra XP for upgrades.
And while this has allowed me to visit incredibly
interesting and detailed worlds, partake in more
sidequests, and witness more
interesting examples of Warren's «play style matters», it also confirms what I've been reading since the beginning.
The
sidequests have to be
interesting, the writing has to be engaging, the characters have to be memorable — just putting a good premise and great graphics on top of boilerplate content isn't enough.
These
sidequests are always
interesting because they help immerse players in the world of Ancient Egypt.
But the more
interesting piece to this puzzle is the fact that your actions from each individual
sidequest resonate throughout the world.
Its mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts, glaciers, beaches, forests, canyons, villages and plains are appealing enough to lure players in visual terms alone, but the fact they hold dozens of
sidequests with
interesting stories and goals (a nice change of pace considering the emptiness of the two most recent 3 - D Zelda games) and other uncountable secrets makes them downright irresistible.
Valiant is a recent project which doesn't even have a trailer or official artwork (although there was a playable demo on Void's booth, developed in a whopping 42 days) with an
interesting premise: an open world, 2 - player cooperative RPG set in a vast land with a very complex morality system, ranging not only from your dialogue actions or how violent you act in missions, but even if you initially ignore the plea for help from a
sidequest - giving NPC.
With minigames and
sidequests, these diversions also offer the player a chance to explore additional lore and character backgrounds that some other players may not be
interested in.
A few of these missions would have been an
interesting aside, but the repetition makes them feel tedious throughout the 15 or so hours of the game (including all the
sidequests).
