The team are also hopeful that the therapeutic effects of
interferon lambda are not limited to influenza, but could also be used to treat other viruses that cause respiratory disease.
In contrast,
interferon lambda did not provoke pro-inflammatory effects, thereby inducing a more favourable outcome.
«We know
interferon lambda has a decent safety profile as it has already been tested for safety in humans.
«Our hypothesis is that
interferon lambda 4 confuses other parts of the immune system and that HCV is able to exploit this,» says PhD student Ewa Terczynska - Dyla, who also took part in the research project.
The researchers will now carry out further work to understand the fundamental mechanisms that make
the interferon lambda genes so important for our ability to combat hepatitis caused by HCV.
For the first time, researchers have unequivocally shown that variations in
the interferon lambda 3 (INLF3) protein are responsible for tissue damage in the liver.
In the second study, the Washington University researchers reported that treatment with
interferon lambda offers a significant advantage: It not only prevents the start of persistent norovirus infections but also eliminates established persistent infections.
Giving the mice
interferon lambda also prevented norovirus infection, suggesting it also should be evaluated as a treatment for norovirus.
