Researchers have been able to watch the interior cells of a plant synthesize cellulose for the first time by tricking the cells into growing on the plant's surface.
A current focus is how the cortical microtubule cytoskeleton — an interior scaffolding that directs construction of the cell's walls and the growth of the plant — is organized and functions and how this guides patterns ofcell growth and division.
