A central theme of the Gallery's exhibition is the increasing mobility of the art world as a
result of new modes of transportation including jet aviation and the
interstate highway
system during the late 1950s and 1960s, when artists, dealers, and works of art moved more swiftly between the coasts and Europe and with increasing regularity.
Some of our greatest accomplishments as a nation have
resulted from commitments to reach a goal that fell well beyond the next election: the Marshall Plan, Social Security, the
interstate highway
system.
