school food reform a couple weeks ago?
What they gave the USDA was a modeled prediction based on all sorts of data the firm collected from 2,314 students at 398
schools that year, including the types of
food served, the amount of time kids were given to eat, prices charged, and
interviews with children and their parents revealing what the kids typically ate in the course of a day and family income.
So in response to this trend I came up
with the simple concept of
interviewing students and recording their suggestions for
school food improvements
with the intention of adding these young stakeholders» unheard voices to the national
school food reform movement.

interview she did
with CNN / Eatocracy.

interviews, as well as a survey of
school food managers and other key stakeholders in Montana — to get their perspectives on the challenges of using whole, fresh
foods,» explained Lacy.
We dug all the way back to 2011 in our archives to pull up this
interview with Jan Poppendieck —
food activist, author, and professor — in which we discuss the impact universal lunch (and breakfast) could have on
school meals.

I attribute my ignorance not to his evasiveness but to my own deficiencies as an investigative reporter (Woodward and Bernstein, I'm not), the fact that he and I were essentially having a friendly chat rather than a hard core audit of his books (to which he probably wouldn't have consented at any rate), and the fact that I come to such an
interview with only a layperson's understanding of the financial side of running a
school food program and probably didn't know all the right questions to ask.
