Perkin isolated a derivative called
allyl - toluidine, then tried to transform it
into quinine by oxidizing it in a mixture with potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid.
Throughout the next hour, the volunteers were asked to blow
into a device called a spectrometer, which measured the levels of common garlic - breath compounds, such as diallyl disulfide and
allyl methyl sulfide.
