Born
into a household of Surrealist artists in 1943, the
architecture student blossomed at Cornell University as a conceptual performance artist whose fame grew with each daring escapade until he died at 35 of cancer, after he was befriended by Robert Rauschenberg and other well - known figures in New York's art world.
