Walking
into Nari Ward's retrospective
Sun Splashed at the ICA Boston, you are greeted with calypso music piping out of a
bright yellow bodega awning that reads HAPPY SMILERS in kitschy font.
This work captures the texture of the
sun's
brightest reflections by letting as little light as possible
into the camera, enabling us to see something we wouldn't normally be able to see — a kind of dog - whistle light that leaves everything else in the photographs underexposed and dark.
If you drive up to the ski resorts you'll get above the smog and it will be
bright and sunny — then as you drive back down toward the city it's like driving
into a bowl of brown soup — the
sun goes away and it gets darker.
In the wake of the first great storm, temperatures plunged
into the single digits for several nights in a row, ascending (in the
bright sun)
into the upper teens or low twenties by day.
Sea ice acts like a
bright white shield that reflects a portion of the
sun's rays back
into space.
