Still willing to continue in his passion, Miguel sneaks
into the mausoleum of none other than his
idol, de la Cruz, and snags his famous guitar, only to find that playing the instrument immediately channels him straight
into the Land of the Dead, where he
meets the deceased ancestors his family always honors for the Day of the Dead, including Mama Imelda (Ubach, To the Bone), from whom he will need a family member's blessing before sunrise in order to return to the realm of the living.
But once Miguel finds his footing and sets on a quest to
meet the spirit of his long - dead musical
idol, who he has also come to believe is the faceless man in his great - grandmother's photos, the movie slips
into a familiar rut and the scenery fades
into the background.
Bolstered by the «do whatever is necessary to follow your dream» motto of his
idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), Miguel seeks to prove himself in a talent contest but his unorthodox means of obtaining an instrument catapult him and his dog Dante
into the Land of the Dead, where he
meets not only Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal), a good - natured con - artist, but many of his forebears, including Mama Imelda.
