If the Marriott deal goes though, I will be dumping quite a few SPG
points into airline transfers as a last hurrah
to one of the best perks in the best program formerly known as Starwood.
Your

BUT you have
to take
into account the value of the
points being
transfer from AMEX
to Elevate Pts, since the ratio is 2:1, the actual value of your ticket cost more from using Virgin America rather than another
airline.
Each of these cards have powerful
transfer programs, which means they are not linked
to one
airline, so you can transform you
points into miles whenever and wherever you need them.
When you
transfer points into your
airline loyalty program it counts as «activity» so the countdown
to expiration is reset once again.
Even better, if you
transfer in increments of 20,000 SPG
points, you receive a bonus of 5,000 miles
into the
airline you are
transferring to — effectively a 1:1.25
transfer ratio.
It is best
to already have an account open with Flying Blue for several months before
transferring points in (the
airline discourages people from opening new accounts and immediately
transferring points into it), so
to take advantage of future promotional awards, it may be a good idea
to open an account now.
When I have a sizeable rewards balance I also
transfer over
to the Singapore
Airlines KrisFlyer program (that's how I booked Joanna and I
into Singapore
Airlines Suites between Hong Kong and Singapore and the Singapore and London) and I always keep an eye out for American
Airlines saver awards just in case there's an opportunity
to transfer Membership Rewards
points over
to Etihad and book American Business or First Class at a favorable rate.
If you have an upcoming trip in mind and plan
to use KrisFlyer miles (Chase Ultimate Rewards
points can be
transferred directly
to Singapore
Airlines), here's what I would take
into account as you evaluate your award booking:

points to airlines turning that 5 % back
into a much more lucrative earning closer
to 10 % back or more.
Note: There is a minimum of 5,000 Hyatt
points required
to initiate a
transfer and they do offer bonuses like getting 20,000 miles plus 5,000 miles when you
transfer 50,000
points into airline miles.
The downside
to Amex
airline transfers is the fee of $ 0.0006 per
point for conversions
into a U.S. frequent flyer program (maximum fee of $ 99).
There are other hotel loyalty programs that allow members
to transfer points into airline programs, but their
transfer rates are typically pretty bad.
Or you can
transfer your Ultimate Rewards
to any of Chase's popular
airline partners, turning those
points into branded frequent flyer miles and adding
to your vacation - ready hoard.
Compare that
to transferring points to airline programs where you can turn the same number of
points into travel valued at over $ 1,000.
