He defends, against the Neoplatonists, the Christian understanding of human
nature as
intrinsically open to sociability such that the life of virtue should be a
social life.
It would only do so were we to understand human
nature, in the manner of Rousseau, to be
intrinsically good, with evil a mirage of unjust
social life that will disappear with the transformation of corrupt institutions.
