There have been many cases in the courts (e.g., improvements in telephones, tires, fluorescent lamps,
flashlight bulbs) in which changes that would have greatly lengthened the life or quality
of an article were withheld to promote replacement sales.11 Often patents have been taken out on superior
inventions but not used, so that the improvements were completely suppressed and an outmoded product continued.
