Two aspects of the program that are usually neglected
in site - based management plans are parent
involvement and attention to mental health issues, including building a positive
school climate
and strong relationships between students
and the adults
in their
lives.
Research suggests two broad strands to this partnership: parents» engagement
in the
life of the
school,
and their
involvement with their child's learning at home
and school.
However we define empowerment, there is agreement that more student
involvement in what takes place
in classrooms
and schools is a good
and necessary thing, promoting higher levels of motivation
and better preparing students to succeed
in school, college, career,
and life.
Through this award,
schools can meet a number of longer term success criteria, such as improved pupil progress, punctuality, attendance
and behaviour
and increased parental
involvement in school life.
Students recognized the importance of motivation, good study habits, a balance between
school and work,
involvement in school life, being organized,
and simply putting forth the effort to succeed.
They include praise
and encouragement from arts professionals; purposeful content relevancy to curriculum
and life outside of
school; active student participation
in program design, planning,
and art - making; group work with community
and parent
