In crystalline form, vanadium pentoxide can take three positively charged lithium ions — three times more than materials presently used in cathodes, such as lithium ironphosphate.
The scientists noted that lithium ironphosphate forms a lattice that creates small tunnels through which the lithium ions flow, but that although the cathode seemed ideal it still took some time for those ions to travel.
