A small number of
island night lizards also live on Sutil Island, near Santa Barbara Island.
Studies on Santa Barbara Island has shown that
the island night lizards are not nocturnal as suggested by their name, but instead are most active at midday, with little activity in the cool early morning or late afternoon, and none at all at night.
Other animals in the islands include island fence lizard, island scrub jay, harbor seal, California sea lion,
island night lizard, barn owl, bald eagles, American kestrel, horned lark and meadowlark and California brown pelican.
Several endemic reptile and amphibian species including the island fence lizard,
island night lizard, and Channel Islands slender salamander live on the islands.
Conservation Status
The island night lizard is listed as Threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, due to habitat alteration and predation resulting from introduction of alien species (e.g., feral cats, goats, pigs, and rabbits).
For example
the island night lizard, a threatened species found nowhere else in the world, occurs on only three islands, one within the park and two owned by the U.S. Navy outside park boundaries.
