isoflurane as the general inhalation anesthetic.

The other two gases have significantly less impact:
isoflurane is only a third
as powerful a greenhouse gas
as is desflurane and sevoflurance has only an eighth of desflurane's effect.
If periodontal disease is caught early, then many times the problem can be treated with medications and other methods, such
as laser therapy and antibiotic gel placement into the deep pockets, while the pet is under
isoflurane gas anesthesia.
The most widely used seems to be acepromazine / atropine premed followed by ketamine / Valium induction and
isoflurane gas, same
as in the general dog population.
Although anesthesia can never be risk free, the use of modern gas anesthetics such
as sevoflurane and
isoflurane, sophisticated monitoring equipment,
as well
as intravenous catheters and IV fluids have greatly improved the safety of general anesthesia.
Anesthesia should always be maintained with an inhalant gas such
as Sevoflurane or
Isoflurane,
as additional doses of induction agents will unnecessarily prolong recovery.
