Over the past several decades, scientists have determined that measuring the soil concentrations of certain
isotopes that form
at a known rate permits direct quantification of soil
production rates.
Using a rare
isotope beam created
at NSCL, the team determined the last unknown nuclear - reaction rate affecting the
production of aluminum - 26 in classical novae.
«First we have contributed by labeling studies using stable
isotopes to investigate the metabolic pathways for latex
production,» says Professor Wolfgang Eisenreich, biochemist
at TU München.
Achieving that longer lead time requires blocking Iran's four routes to nuclear weapons: through its Natanz and Fordow uranium enrichment facilities, where thousands of centrifuges separate uranium
isotopes; through plutonium
production at the Arak heavy water reactor, which Iran says is needed to produce medical radioisotopes; and by way of a covert path involving undisclosed facilities.
Tennessine is in recognition of the contribution of the Tennessee region, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee
at Knoxville, to superheavy element research, including the
production and chemical separation of unique actinide target materials for superheavy element synthesis
at ORNL's High Flux
Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC).
This HEU is the result of nuclear fuel use
at Chalk River Laboratories for CNL's research reactors, the NRX and NRU, and for the
production of medical
isotopes through the irradiation of HEU targets in the NRU.
He spent part of the summer
at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, and is now
at work on a process to cut the
production cost of radioactive
isotopes.
The present
production of terrestrial 14C and 10Be appears to be near historically - low levels, due to persistently high solar activity that inhibits the rate
at which these
isotopes are produced.
