Loeb has become a bete noir for liberal groups and the teachers unions for his pet concerns, especially the broadly encompassing
issue of education reform.
It is quickly becoming one of the defining
issues of the education reform movement.
Yet this election cycle presents an opportunity to put
the issue of education reform front and center due to an array of clashing ideas surrounding unions, vouchers, school choice and standardized testing.
So where was
the issue of education reform during the presidential campaign?
At the most recent Sun Valley conference — an annual gathering of the country's most influential CEOs and financiers — Moskowitz described herself as a «single - issue» voter, focused on
the issue of education reform.
In truth,
the issue of education reform has been smoldering for a while.

education and research, and modernizing Canada's infrastructure?

A few weeks ago, the Ministry
of Education and Science and together with the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations
issued a
reform road map, which, in the opinion
of many researchers, brings the process to a new and very dangerous stage.
What bothered me was the lack
of commitment to
education, to the environmental
issues, and health care
reform.
In a long piece in the Winter 2017
issue of Education Next, Stephen Eide took a close look at New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's efforts to roll back the education reforms of his predecessor and pursue an education agenda of

Not to be outdone, a «platform» released by the Movement for Black Lives (a group
of organizations organized by Black Lives Matter)
issued a scorched - earth condemnation
of every aspect
of the
reform agenda, which it characterized as «a systematic attack... coordinated by an international
education privatization agenda, bankrolled by billionaire philanthropists... and aided by the departments
of education at the federal, state, and local level.»
The choice
issue is perhaps the line drawn in the sand
of education reform and, therefore, deserves more than advocacy.
In the following debate, Jay Greene
of the University
of Arkansas's Department
of Education Reform and Mike Petrilli
of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute explore areas
of agreement and disagreement around this
issue of school choice and school quality.
I became aware
of this fact some years ago, when I started writing about
education issues and found that every
reform initiative I read about — standards, testing, whatever — referred me back to a seminal text entitled «A Nation at Risk.»
Yet the fates
of urban schools and the surrounding neighborhoods are inextricably linked, as Mark R. Warren compellingly explains in «Communities and Schools: A New View
of Urban
Education Reform» in the Summer 2005
issue of the Harvard Educational Review.
In this new report, which was funded by the Joyce Foundation and released by
Education Sector, the presidents
of 30 local unions in six states speak candidly about their views on
issues including
reforming teacher pay, coping with the No Child Left Behind Act, new competition from charter schools, and the challenges
of leading multiple generations
of teachers who don't always see eye to eye.
«Dean Murphy has been at the center
of the national debate on school
reform, and he has encouraged active engagement by faculty and students with critical
issues in the field
of education.
The government lacks credibility to refer to an «ambitious package
of education reforms», without announcing any measures to address these
issues.
This 10th anniversary
issue — Quality Counts at 10: A Decade

To be sure, mistakes were made: Not understanding the limitations or unintended consequences
of federal leadership on
education; a disastrous, ill - timed excursion into teacher evaluation
reform; a technocratic impulse that was insufficiently sensitive to parents» concerns about
issues like student privacy; and on and on.
This year's survey results are presented in a report that includes analysis
of ten - year trends in public opinion on the most important
issues in
education reform.
Joan Baratz - Snowden, the vice president for
education policy and
reform, has become the deputy director
of the educational -
issues department at the American Federation
of Teachers.
The mayor has generally distanced himself from
education issues, and Boston's best - known school
reform consists
of «pilot» schools, which have more than usual autonomy but are still subject to the district's
education - crushing collective bargaining agreement.
