The case supported by Students Matter, Davids v. New York, challenges several
job protections embedded into state statute, including «last in, first out,» which generally requires districts to lay off teachers in reverse seniority order.
To enact these policies effectively, educators need
protection from contradictory and overwhelming demands, training in viable alternatives to existing punitive discipline responses — including access to viable
job -
embedded professional learning communities — and sufficient and ongoing support for implementing new and better practices.
