It's an incredible time to start
your journey as a birth or postpartum doula.
And that time came in November of 2011 when I began
my journey as a Birth Doula.
Not exact matches
We have always seen life
as a linear
journey from
birth to the grave in 70 - plus years.
The religious event commemorates the grueling
journey of the Virgin Mary and Joseph
as they traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a haven to give
birth to their son.
It's also about protecting the natural process of pregnancy and
birth and recognizing it is part of a womans
journey and not a medical emergency and promotes
as little medical intervention
as possible unless needed for mother or baby safety.
As I continue on this
journey, I find the more I learn about hospitals and standard procedures and doctors» timeframes, etc., the more I think women who elect to
birth in a hospital are «brave» rather than the women who do so in their own homes.
I love caring for families
as they
journey through pregnancy,
birth and parenting.
It is aptly named
as it looks at the
journey of four women who are planning a trial of labor for a vaginal
birth after cesarean (VBAC).
Her role
as a
birth worker is to support the experience each family desires emotionally, spiritually and physically, and to smooth the bumps in the road that accompany this unpredictable, yet incredible
journey.
My
journey to
birth work was relatively unconventional
as I came from an academic perspective.
As a Doula I accompany you through the
birth journey, hold space during the process and become a witness of your new family's transformation.
My work
as a Doula has been deeply influenced by my own natural
births and breastfeeding
journey.
In most cases, new mothers are covered for a free breast pump through insurance anywhere from
as soon
as the baby is born up to 1 year after
birth (i.e. throughout their breastfeeding
journey).
At any point in our parenting
journeys, we can reflect back on our early days
as mothers or fathers and glow in the knowledge of how much we have changed since that... first positive pregnancy test... or our oldest child's
birth... or a seemingly endless night of breastfeeding... or our struggle with learning how to do positive discipline... or the first day of school... or our daughter's first basketball win... or our son's first crush... or our child's high school graduation... or our daughter's wedding... or our son's first child...
Being on - call also means that I do not travel outside a specific distance from my
birth client's birthing location in any direction so that I can attend her
birth as soon
as she is in active labor and ready for me to arrive and begin documenting her
journey.
The difference with doing my LOVE YOUR
BIRTH childbirth education course is that you are guided by a professional through your
journey and are given the tools necessary for really preparing yourself for the unknowns of labor, childbirth and beyond
as best that you can, and feel deeply positive about it - even embrace the unexpected, when things did not turn out
as planned.
While you will never be able to predict the future and anticipate what your relationship with your child's
birth family will be down the road, there are a few really important things to remember that should provide reassurance
as you embark on this
journey:
