The Christian who commits himself to Christ as Lord, and voluntarily takes upon himself the way of the cross, also knows something of the
unexpected joy of the resurrection.
This is why the sacraments are all marked, each in their own way, by both the sign of the cross and the light and
joy of the resurrection.
Matthew grasped that
the joy of the resurrection could only be fully grasped by one who had meditated upon the despair of the crucifixion.
But we have substituted Word without Supper, which is a replication of synagogue worship minus
the joy of the resurrection.
For only then can we know what
the joy of the resurrection life means.
Perhaps the present poverty of Christian art and thought can be traced to our avoidance of the cross and our consequent deprivation of
the joy of resurrection, hindering new creation.
