WHY IT WORKS:
While regular
squats are great,
squat jumps offer a new take on the traditional, one that you're definitely going to feel in your quads.
The burpee is done in a 4 - step phase: — Start in a standing position — Drop to a
squat position
while at the same time putting your arms to the ground - Kick your feet back into a push up position
while supporting yourself on your arms — With a
jump, return your feet to the
squat position — Thrust yourself up from the
squat position with the arms above your head.
(Note - when
squatting or
jumping with your landing absorbed in a
squat, be sure your weight transfers to your heels and you sit back into your
squat while keeping your chest up.)
And
while it's true, you will need to avoid certain types of exercise at first (
squat, lunges, running,
jumping), there are lots of exercises than you can do to build the muscles around your knees - for support - and to burn calories.
For example, one workout that I will do, popularized by surfer Laird Hamilton, is to get into a
squat position at the bottom of the pool and then do an explosive
jump squat up and out the surface of the pool as high as I can go
while clapping my hands above my head.
Barbell
squats while balancing on a stability ball, single - arm - single - leg - rotating - kettlebell - clean - with -
jump - press - into - handstand - push - ups, etc are little more than overly - complicated, dangerous circus acts that are not only impossible to master, but also prevents proper progression and intensity which limits any beneficial results you would get.
Jumping jacks before getting in the shower, leg lifts
while laying on the couch,
squats while folding clothes... etc etc..
Doing
squats, pushups or
jumping jacks
while watching TV could help you get your 30 minutes without cutting out your leisure time.
There would of course be significant accessory work, depending on the athlete's goals - a powerlifter may then perform significantly more barbell based posterior chain work, a track cyclist would move to Olympic
squats or depth
jumps,
while a bodybuilder or recreational athlete may move to individual isolations.
Also,
while not within the inclusion criteria, it is noteworthy that Sleivert et al. (2004) tested
jump squat force production in male athletes using both standard back
squat and split -
squat techniques.
To complete a full
squat, place your feet approximately shoulder width apart (a good method is
jumping and landing, this is close enough) then lower your body slowly to the ground,
while keeping your feet flat, until you're resting on your feet for balance.
