Just like when riding a
normal size monster, you can atack
enemies while riding a giant monster, as well as utilize its large size to trample monsters wandering about.
The rulebook mentions cool stuff like the
enemy you're fighting maybe being nothing more than a
normal inmate, doctor or even a potted plant that
just happened to get in the way.
However, a few moments do exist when GRFS loses its flexibility a bit and strays too close to similar scenarios in other war games (waves of
enemies prior to extraction in one mission, segments where a turret is operated from a helicopter), which
just aren't as good as GRFS «
normal gameplay.
So a good player can
just pick it up, and then run through 90 % of the game avoiding almost every
normal enemy encounter in sight.
Just because you have seen everything in the
normal mode or the 3Ds version, doesn't mean you already mastered every spawn point of the
enemies and items.
Even some bosses are
just larger versions of
normal enemies.
John, the game starts out with Very Easy, Easy and
Normal unlocked, and if you play on either of the first two you get given an item that automatically triggers special moves so you can mash buttons instead of learning to use rising, charge and cyclone attacks yourself,
just mash A, and draw the shape of the weapon you feel works best on the
enemy every so often.
For all the boasts about difficulty — and it is difficult, forcing you to actually unlock anything above «
normal» — the game also welcomes newcomers or those
just wanting to tear around and have fun, with the «easy» and «very easy» modes making it no problem to simply tear through
enemies and have a grand time doing so.
The bosses» damage output is extremely high relative both to what
normal enemies can dish out and to what you can yourself, and the aforementioned frequency of stunning attacks grants some bosses several hits on you if they manage to land
just one.
On
normal difficulty, there are a few fights in which I never left the same cover,
just popping out to kill
enemies until the scenario ended.
You can play this in
normal mode, where you can have external views and have your AI crew enabled, who will see and shoot at your
enemy even when you really can't, or you can go hardcore mode, which is
just you and your tank against anyone and everyone else.
A play through on the
normal difficulty will get you a good 5 hours while the higher difficulties will be a little longer
just because the
enemy AI is much smarter this time around and it makes certain missions frighteningly difficult.
