kaiju monster of the original was nowhere to be seen and the story seemed to be based around a young girl trapped in a bunker

kaiju war, genius robot pilot - wannabe Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny) results in both being arrested and inducted into the Pan Pacific Defense Corps just in time to battle another monster incursion as well as mysterious rogue robots in a subplot that's more predictable than it seems to realize.
There are other
kaiju attacking the populace — Godzilla is probably locked in battle
with them and we puny humans are collateral damage.

The best stuff in Pacific Rim had nothing to do
with missiles and monsters but the underground economy, the black market trading in
kaiju parts, the mad scientists trying to figure out how to stop the world's end, the idea that our species was on the brink of extinction thanks to an external threat that showed no signs of slowing down any time soon.

It's never really explained what happened to any of the characters from the first film,

doubtful this will hold a candle to Pacific Rim (best modern
kaiju film imo), but I'm still optimistic I'll enjoy this
