The Autopilot didn't recognize the side of the truck, the driver was likely not
keeping his
hands on the steering
wheel like you are supposed to
even on Autopilot, and none of the safety devices built into the Tesla worked because that's what happens in side underride crashes.
Even though Tesla's Autopilot system is currently primarily for highway use, it is capable of detecting cyclists (as pictured above), but like any other situation with Autopilot, drivers should
keep their
hands on the
wheel and be ready to take over.
It's not quite clear what those restrictions will be, but I can guess that maybe they would prevent the Autopilot from
even being turned
on on more types of roads, and maybe enforce better the «
keep your
hands on the
wheel» rule via sensors.
Even though you know to «
keep your eyes
on the road and your
hands upon the
wheel», you've multi-tasked before without incident so why worry now - right?
One of them made a racist comment about interracial couples once, and
kept trying to grab the steering
wheel (right
on top of where my
hand was, mind you) sometimes when I didn't
even see what I could be doing wrong.
