Takeaway # 3: The money stays in the
classroom: paying, training and supporting strong teachers, improving curriculum and
keeping class
sizes manageable.
The movie includes no acknowledgment that the things teachers want for themselves - more resources devoted to education, smaller class
sizes, policies that allow them to
keep order in the
classroom - are also good for kids.
But while the immediate savings will be used to
keep the district afloat rather than to improve education, over time right -
sizing will allow more money to be funneled into the
classroom.
Expanding
classrooms creates smaller class
sizes, increases access and opportunity for more students to quality schools, and
keeps the promise of a quality education for all California students.
By switching group members, group
size and the arrangement of your
classroom, you give students the opportunity to get to know each other, discover strategies for how to work and communicate with a variety of personalities, and
keep things from getting boring!
Despite concerns of critics, California's State Board of Education, keenly aware of the financial stress schools are under, has since 2009 almost routinely approved class
size waivers for scores of districts facing fiscal penalties under existing law generally aimed at
keeping no more than 30 students in a
classroom.
