FWIW, ebooks purchased through Amazon's bookstore can be easily converted to Kobo's epub /
kepub formats using Calibre and a plug - in; you're not locked into the Kindle ecosystem.
Kobo made headlines this week when they nixed their own proprietary
KePub format from also being downloaded to a users PC.
The kepub format is compatible with ePub leading some to theorize that they could just change the extension to.
It is only that Kobo are slapping
their KePub formatting on it and choosing not to sell the ePub3 file that is the problem.
Note that
a kepub formatted book needs the extension to be.
kepub format using Calibre or the Kepubify conversion utility.
Not exact matches
You can simple copy e-books files to reader without any external software (I prefer Calibre to do that, it convert any
format to more recommended
kepub but it isn't required)-- e.g. in Poland most online bookshops doesn't used DRM protection (only watermark) so you not need to worry about.
For the record, Amazon's
format is mobi, Kobo's is
kepub, most are ebooks are pdf or epub
format, and you can also use doc
format with ereaders as well.
I used to think blank
format meant either PDF or
KePub but I think maybe it's just
KePub.
KePub is, as I understand it, Kobo's proprietary ePub
format.
If you have a Kobo ereader, use one of their reading apps or their Kobo desktop software to read the books you purchase from them, then the
format you're reading is the
kepub version.
But I really wish that Kobo would list clearly on each book's description page what type of file
format it is in (epub -LRB-, Adobe DRM epub, pdf, or
kepub) instead of making me do this work around.

Kobo's

kepub, have the top title bar, but regular ePubs use a different rendering engine so they don't have that.
