Diet — The
ketogenic diet is a specialized diet that may be appropriate
for certain children who do not respond well to standard medication
therapies or have problems with medications.
In 1995, Nebeling and coworkers attempted the first nutritional metabolic

for intractable epilepsy.
As an aside, many types of cancer cells do NOT have this adaptability and require glucose to thrive, which makes the
ketogenic diet an effective
therapy for combating cancer.
The high fat, low carbohydrate
ketogenic diet (KD) has long been recognized as an effective non-toxic
therapy for reducing epileptic seizures in children.
Ketogenic dietary
therapies are designed to cause a metabolic shift within the body, with fat becoming the primary fuel rather than carbohydrate and ketone bodies replacing glucose as an energy source
for the brain.
In view of these recommendations, we would propose that all children with LGS who have failed appropriate AED
therapy are funded
for an initial assessment of suitability
for ketogenic dietary
therapy.
We therefore propose that infants diagnosed with infantile spasms who have failed appropriate first - line
therapy are funded
for an initial assessment of suitability
for ketogenic dietary
therapy.
In contrast, therapeutic
ketogenic diets used
for epilepsy or as experimental cancer
therapy often restrict carbs to fewer than 5 % of calories or fewer than 15 grams per day to further drive up ketone levels (9, 10).
Although it is often suggested that children with epilepsy who are benefiting from
ketogenic dietary
therapy continue this
for at least two years, duration of treatment could be shorter in patients with infantile spasms who become seizure - free; one study reported no adverse effect on seizure outcomes and less risk of growth disturbances when treatment was tapered down after 8 months (15).
A classical
ketogenic diet — with a staggering 70 - 90 percent of total calories coming from fat — might not be necessary.51 Classical
ketogenic diets restrict protein as well as carbohydrate, since 48 - 58 percent of the amino acids in dietary proteins can be glucogenic, thereby undermining the purpose of a diet intended to generate a high amount of ketones and limit glucose as much as possible.46 As
therapy for AD, however, simply lowering carbohydrate intake to a point where some ketones are generated and hyperinsulinemia is corrected could have positive effects just by easing the metabolic burden on the brain.
Moreover, a ketone - producing, lower - carbohydrate diet would still allow
for consumption of a wide array of low glycemic load vegetables and fruits, which are typically richer in micronutrients, antioxidants, and phytochemicals than their high glycemic load refined grain and sugar counterparts.54 This would make this primary avenue
for therapy more practical, since the difficulty with sticking to classical
ketogenic diets is typically that they're unpalatable and too restrictive.

ketogenic dieting as a
therapy for certain conditions.
A team of Trinity College researchers has found that three weeks on a low carbohydrate «
ketogenic» diet can lower pain and inflammation in juvenile and adult animals, offering hope that metabolic, diet - based
therapies could have broad implications
for helping people.
Based on these results and clinical experience with diet - based
therapies for pediatric epilepsy, a novel anti-inflammatory and analgesic application of
ketogenic diet
therapy would be effective, non-addictive and relatively free of major side effects.

ketogenic diet is a proven
therapy option
for the use in children given the strong clinical data.

ketogenic diet, when implemented in conjunction with radiation
therapy for the treatment of brain tumors in mice, resulted in the eradication of these tumors in the majority of the mice.12

therapy are funded
for an initial assessment of suitability
for ketogenic dietary
therapy.

ketogenic therapy is also increasingly being explored as a treatment option
for other disorders such as neurological cancers.

therapy for epilepsy in the 1920s, the

Ketogenic therapy calls
for restricting net carbs to 50 grams per day and limiting protein; I recommend a limit of 1 gram of protein per kilogram of lean body mass.
