I started on my journey a few weeks ago - was pretty disappointed that I did nt lose weight quickly even though
ketostix showed I was in ketosis.
Also, it's not really important how strong the readings
on ketostix are (darker colour does not indicate more fat loss).
I often have high
Ketostix readings even though I've been keto - adapted for 3 years.
So quite literally, after a few weeks into your low carb ketogenic diet, you'll likely start seeing a change in your ketone levels as measured
by ketostix.
Ketone levels vary
with Ketostix for reasons including how hydrated you are.
I also found that on days I creep over the 50g a little (more intuition than strict tracking of macros) I am still in keto (based on the colour reading
of Ketostix) just not as strongly.
They are also popular among low - carb, non athletes for the way in which they often
turn ketostix a deep purple.
While
Ketostix measure acetoacetate, blood ketone meter measures beta - bydroxybutryate which is what you want to monitor.
While Ketostix are ok for getting some sort of indication every now and then.
One point I want to make
about Ketostix is that a lot of people use them because they seem cheap (initially).
I plan to test every two weeks and use
ketostix in between.
I am trying to do it too with
just ketostix (can't afford the fancy stuff) and would love to feel more energy... have felt fatigued all my life, too.
As a result of the continued conversion of acetoacetate to beta - hydroxybutyrate, the serum and urine volume of acetoacetate (the only ketone detected
by ketostix) is significantly reduced.
One method of detecting whether you're in ketosis is by way
of Ketostix.
My fasting ketones
on ketostix is about 4 - 12mmol / L.
Ketostix only detects one type of acid and a lot of other factors can affect how light ketone bodies become in urine.
Unfortunately, there is no way
with ketostix to determine which of the above is at play.
I tracked my ketones using
ketostix.
I am not following your meal plan but I am really relying on some of your great new recipes, and I did pick up
the ketostix... which is really keeping me motivated....
I have been LCHF for 6 months so, unless there is something very wrong, I should be in ketosis but I never use
the ketostix and have also heard that unless you are just starting out they are not reliable as a measure after a while.
Ketostix, Uriscan and other urine detection strips are not as accurate.
Ketostix are good as «indicators» of whether or not you are in ketosis (not always) but may not show the actual values.
Ketostix will become less accurate as your body gets keto - adapted.
Don't Give Up and Read Further Are you using
ketostix or blood ketone meter?
Please don't put «
ketostix» as a possible way to detect ketosis.
But
My ketostix always show urine ketones level between moderate to large (40 - 80).
Have been on the keto diet for 4 weeks strictly, and today went and bought
the ketostix and it didn't show any traces at all.....
Those are amazing results Angela, well done!I I wouldn't trust the numbers on
Ketostix - I would only use them to see how my body reacts to foods and whether I am in Ketosis, and only for the first few weeks.
I guess the best way to measure ketone would still be blood ketone meter but if you can measure anything using
Ketostix, it means you are in ketosis.
Still a long way to go mind... I use
ketostix and measuring with a blood meter and am in ketosis every day but only later in the day.
According to
ketostix I'm in ketosis, small amounts detected and moderate at night.
Don't worry about not being ketones if using
Ketostix (I explained why in this post).
Thank you Erika, yes,
Ketostix are not reliable and high ketone levels are not needed for weight loss.
